How to Make a Homemade Taco Sauce
This sauce is a game-changer, adding a burst of flavor and heat that takes the Crunchwrap to the next level. Made with a blend of a rich tomato paste, spices, hot peppers, and a touch of vinegar, this sauce strikes the perfect balance between spicy and tangy, complementing the other ingredients deliciously.
Add drizzle of olive oil to frying pan over medium-high heat; once pan is hot, add ground beef, breaking up as it cooks; cook thoroughly, 5-8 minutes
Carefully drain excess oils/fats from frying pan, return to heat; add amount of water as described on taco seasoning packet; stir in taco seasoning; mixing well
Remove pan from heat; and add beef to large bowl; set aside
Prepare remaining Crunchwrap ingredients (i.e. shred lettuce, grate cheddar cheese, warm up queso/nacho cheese sauce); this is also where you’ll want to prepare the homemade spicy taco sauce (see recipe below)
Warm tortillas in microwave according to package; place on a clean surface to begin Crunchwrap assembly
Generously coat center of warmed tortillas with queso/nacho cheese sauce (leave room at border for folding); place tostado shell onto cheese sauce center
Add one scoop of beef on top of tostado shell; coat beef with layer of sour cream, followed by shredded lettuce and shredded cheese (you can also dice onions or tomatoes, if desired); top with homemade spicy taco sauce
Carefully fold tortilla edges into center, creating pleats; invert after all folds have been made to keep structure in tact
In a cast iron skillet (or griddle), coat with thin layer of extra virgin olive oil (or a cooking oil) and place over medium heat
Once cast iron or griddle is at temp, carefully add assembled Crunchwrap folded side down; cooking until browned; once bottom side is browned, flip and brown top of Crunchwrap (about 30 seconds to 1 minute per side); remove and set aside; repeat for all assembled wraps
Important Notes: You will likely need to recoat with oil several times while cooking. Additionally, please be very observant while browning, as the process tends to occur quickly and can burn quickly; the first one will likely take the longest.
Cut Crunchwrap in half and serve immediately; use homemade spicy taco sauce, sour cream, or another store bought sauce for dip!
Homemade Spicy Taco Sauce Directions
Prepare hot peppers by removing stems; to reduce heat, cut peppers in half and remove seeds; thinly slice
Add peppers to food processor and add in white vinegar, ground cumin, and smoked paprika
Thoroughly blend ingredients until consistent; no large chunks of pepper should be visible (about 30 seconds)
Transfer spicy taco sauce mixture to a small frying pan over medium heat; add water, extra virgin olive oil, and tomato paste
Bring to simmer and reduce heat to low; stir continuously to mix; sauce should be consistent in color throughout; once consistent, add sugar and mix well to combine; allow to gently simmer for 1-2 more minutes
Remove from heat and transfer to adequately sized storage bowl
